Yangon, Myanmar

Tomas Thein sat in the back seat of his black BMW, staring intently through the tinted windows as he watched the lanky American exiting a blue sedan under the highway overpass. The man moved past a burned-out van riddled with graffiti, glancing at his surroundings as he stepped up to the side door of Thein’s car.

The bearded driver in jeans and a loose-fitting button-up shirt unlocked the vehicle then stepped out, motioning for the American to enter the rear passenger’s side.

Michael Lindell reluctantly stepped in, secreting himself against the seat with one hand near his right hip while the driver closed the door.

“You need not worry about drawing that pistol of yours,” said Thein. “I have no intention of killing you, and I certainly know you will not attempt the reverse despite trying to convince yourself otherwise.”

“What the hell do you want? I already agreed to help you if you release my sister and niece.”

Thein pulled out his cellphone, holding it up like a jewel and turning it around. “These gadgets are truly astounding, but you can only know a man and read his intentions by seeing him face to face.” He pivoted, gazing at Lindell. “But you know of such things…a man in your line of work, protecting others. You have to be able to read a person’s intentions in a micro-glance to understand if they are a threat or not.”

“Your point?” said Lindell, rubbing a sweaty palm on his pant leg.

Thein activated his phone, turning it around towards Lindell. “Today’s proof-of-life photo to keep you motivated.”

Lindell’s eyes narrowed as he moved closer, his lower lip quivering while staring at the image. “You son of a bitch. When this is over, I’ll…”

Thein flicked the phone around, turning it off. “Michael, Michael…you surprise me, having lived in my country for so long but still without any understanding of the Buddhist concept of living in the moment. And right now, in this exact fucking moment, I need you to provide the locations of your security details within the high-rise buildings along the secretary of state’s route.”

Lindell balled and unballed his right fist, glancing out the window. Thein watched the squirming American, whose face seemed to drain of color with each passing moment.

“Michael, I have studied you from afar for a long time and know you are a man of honor and duty, but right now, you only have one question to ask: is Victoria Perry’s life more important than Sarah and Maya’s lives? It really is that simple.”

The American shook his head. “Fuck you. You don’t know anything about me. But I sure as hell know plenty about you and how you’ve corrupted the hell out of this country.”

“What you call corruption, I call influence, and I have tried to steer this nation under its pathetic leaders towards economic independence from the West.”

“Wow, you must be doing some of that opium you peddle to believe that. All you’ve done is steer the suffering of the poor and spread human trafficking to every corner of this country.
